While corticosteroids, immunomodulators or antibiotics remain mainstays of medical treatment, interest is growing in complementary solutions with fewer side effects. CBD – either on its own or in formulas with terpenes and antioxidants – has emerged as a candidate thanks to its anti-inflammatory and calming action, which has been proven in the laboratory. What do we already know and how can we apply it safely?

Three diseases, a common inflammatory basis

Atopic dermatitis (Eczema) affects around 10% of children in Portugal, a common disease that occurs more often in urban areas; the skin barrier is fragile, losing water and allowing allergens to enter.

Psoriasis affects 2-3% of the world’s adult population; it is an autoimmune response that accelerates cell renewal, forming scaly plaques and, in some cases, arthritis.

Rosacea involves facial flushing and papules in around 5% of the population; small facial arteries become hyper-reactive, and there is also inflammation and proliferation of skin microbes.

Despite different causes, they all share two targets where CBD can act: excessive inflammation and skin barrier dysfunction.

How CBD benefits the skin

Cannabidiol interacts with CB1, CB2 and TRPV1 receptors present in keratinocytes and fibroblasts, triggering effects that are of interest to those with sensitive skin:

Decreases pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-17A, IL-23 and TNF-α, reducing the redness and thickness of plaques.

It balances the keratinocyte cycle, stopping the accelerated desquamation typical of psoriasis.

It strengthens the barrier by stimulating the production of filaggrin and ceramides – The initial results are encouraging, but they are not yet a substitute for conventional medical therapy. The best strategy is to integrate CBD gradually, document the evolution with photos and “before/after” records and maintain an open dialog with your dermatologist.

Why are we talking about sensitive skin and CBD?
